OCTOBER 5, 2010

       YOU SAY POTATO

I say Yummy!!!!!

Potatoes

Just saying that word makes my mouth water.

Potato.
Taters.
Spuds.
Tubers.

OK. Back to reality!

I am an avid low-carber. Due to the high quantity of carbohydrates in potatoes, I have reduced their quantity in my diet. But some recent articles and blogs may indicate a ray of hope for my favorite food.

French Fries
Baked Potatoes
Sweet Potato Fries
Home Fries
Potato Chips

OOPS!!

Did I do it again?

One blog in particular delves into how potatoes became a prime source of food, and discusses both their good and bad effects. The three articles can be found here, here and here.

I also just came across an interesting potato experiment. A man, who obviously works for the potato industry, will be eating nothing but potatoes for 60 days.

What a Lucky Guy!!

He will be chronicling his dietary adventures and health thru a blog that can be found here.

I know I will be following this experiment closely. I hope we find that potatoes are healthier than we think!

A caution to all my Diabetic and Overweight patients.

Please do not try this experiment at home!

Let's wait til we get some data ; )

 FLU SHOTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE

Flushots are fully covered by Medicare.

Flushots, while supplies last, are included as part of a Traditional Wellness Plan.

For everyone else, Flushots will be available for $30.

There are other ways to prevent the flu.

My favorite is to supplement with Vitamin D, which is now available as our supplement of the month for October. Our Vitamin D supplement  has been shown to increase your blood level of Vitamin D, increasing the ability of your immune system to fight off infections such as the flu.

If you are unsure of your Vitamin D level, testing is also available at our office.

Risks of our Western style diet

I have written before about the dangers of our Westernized American diet. I have also written about the dangers of Metabolic syndrome and how it leads to all forms of disease such as Obesity, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Arthritis, and so on and so on.....

Metabolic syndrome often leads to an increased in fat deposits around your middle, and also your abdominal organs. It happens to other species as well, if they are fed the wrong diet!!

I just finished reading a short article titled, Western diet linked with increased risk for metabolic syndrome  . They found that a western style diet caused an almost 2.5x increased risk in metabolic syndrome.

If you do not believe me, here is another article, Metabolic syndrome doubles cardiovascular risk , which had similar findings.

This is not good!!!

Fortunately you can avoid Metabolic Syndrome and its ill effects. For advice on how, please schedule your yearly Wellness Exam. During this consultation, we not only help with your present ailments, if you have any, you get advice on how to prevent illness and disease in the future, especially Metabolic Syndrome. Special metabolic testing is available to delineate your metabolic plusses and minuses, which then allows for your individualized health and wellness plan.

The Institute For Medical Wellness goal is not just to treat disease, but to prevent it from taking root in the first place!

Institute For Medical Wellness Supplement of the Month:

Our supplement of the month for October 2010 is Vitamin D3. I believe that Vitamin D3 aids our immune systems, which helps protect us from the flu, or "influenza".

Our Vitamin D3 supplement, contains Vitamin D3, 2000iu per drop, and contains approximately 900 drops per bottle. The average dosage is between 1 and 4 drops daily, best taken at night.

Vitamin D3 can now be purchased for $15, $5 off the regular price. Vitamin D works great with or without a flu shot.
