Institute For Medical Wellness Healthy Living Report

Many of you already know, that Vitamin D is my favorite vitamin. I like to say that if I was stuck on a desert island and was only allowed one vitamin to take with me, I would take Vitamin D. A recent article in Family Practice News, 5-15-2010 edition, reviewed an observational study of over 9000 patients who started with low Vitamin-D levels of less than 30 ng/ml. In those patients whose levels rose to an average of 44 ng/ml, they had the lowest rates of:

-Death

-New Onset Diabetes

-Coronary Artery Disease

-MI (Myocardial Infarction or Heart Attack)

-Heart Failure

-Depression

-Kidney Failure

So get your Vitamin D.

Summer sunshine is one good way.

Supplementation is another.

If you use supplements, getting your blood level checked is recommended. I consider a sweet spot for Vitamin D to be 50-80 ng/ml, with 50 probably just as good as 80. Vitamin D levels are covered by most health insurers. Yes, I actually wrote something nice about health insurers. But here is the caveat. Medicare has restrictions on Vitamin D testing, and as Medicare goes, so go the other health insurers eventually. We do offer Vitamin D testing for those without insurance coverage for $49 plus a lab drawing charge.

We also sell an excellent formulation of Vitamin D in drop form. It contains 2000iu of Vitamin D3 per drop and has 900 drops per bottle. The only other ingredient is olive oil. The average adult supplementation is 2-3 drops per day. A bottle costs $20. So not only is Vitamin D an amazing vitamin, at about $2 per month, it is also extremely inexpensive.

I just wish French Fries contained Vitamin D ; )

I have taken a little well-deserved flack for my "french-fry addiction".  But I have also been asked, "Are all potatoes bad for you? What about yams and sweet potatoes?'

As with just about everything in diet, nutrition and healthcare, there are many conflicting opinions. But since you are reading this newsletter, I am assuming you will be interested in hearing mine. If not just skip to the end of the page where you will find wonderful links  to all of our tremendous Wellness Plans and programs ; )

But now back to the spuds!

Potatoes are very high in carbohydrates but also contain many minerals that our body needs. White potatoes are known to increase sugars in diabetics and pre-diabetics. But what about sweet potatoes and yams? You would think that sweet potatoes would be bad for low-carb dieters, as their name "sweet potato" must contain a large amount of sugar. To test this hypothesis, Tom Naughton, of "Fat Head- The Movie" fame, experimented with sweet potatoes in his diet by testing his glucose or sugar reading after eating these yummy taters for breakfast. Here is a link to his blog post.

My suggestion. I would not eat potatoes or yams alone. No matter how many vitamins and minerals they contain, the carb-load is still too high when eaten alone. But, when eaten as a side dish, with a protein and healthy fat food, such as eggs, meat, chicken or fish, they can be enjoyed. In fact, here is one of my favorite recipes for sweet potato fries!

DrH's Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Wash and slice potatoes into even slices and put into a plastic freezer bag.
Add garlic flavored olive oil to potatoes in bag, seal and shake to disperse oil throughout potatoes.
Line a baking pan with aluminum foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray.
Place potatoes strips in single layer on pan.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
Add other spices that you wish. I like cilantro.
Place in preheated oven for 30-50 minutes, depending upon your desired level of doneness.

I checked an online dictionary- doneness: the condition of being cooked to the desired degree

Remove from oven, let sit for a few minutes, then enjoy!! And ketchup is not necessary!!!
