Sustainability in Life and Health!

First I hope everyone had an uneventful Halloween, and that no one will be visiting my office with a tummy ache from eating too many Halloween goodies! I do not think anyone could sustain themselves on eating Halloween goodies for very long. Which brings me to the topic of this newsletter, sustainability of health.

Sustainabilty can be defined as "the ability to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs." But as it relates to your individual health, the definition can be changed to "the ability to meet the your present healthcare needs, without compromising, and better yet improving your future health."

Sustainability of your personal health is why I went to medical school, it is why I chose to be a family physician, and it is why I founded the Institute For Medical Wellness. I work as a solo private physician so that my only concern is the individual sitting in my office, and helping them to improve their health, and to sustain good health far into the future.

Had I joined a hospital or group medical practice as many other physicians have, I would have been pushed, forced, or coerced to go along with the crowd! However, in healthcare, going along with the crowd is not always best for individuals, and can be detrimental to your health. If I went along with the crowd, I would be just one of the many HMO and insurance dominated offices that spend more time with bureaucracy, paperwork, quotas, and corporate or group-think, than with helping you to achieve and sustain your good health.

Instead, I chose to go it alone. Going alone has enabled me to develop trusting patient relationships, while allowing me ample time to use my ever balding head to think, think, and think some more about what is best for each individual. Instead of being rushed by an overcrowded HMO waiting room, and quickly reacting to symptoms by prescribing a pill or a test, I prefer to use logic, and to look for trends and triggers of disease. When after a more thorough and extensive history taking, with many questions asked and answered, we come up with the trigger and causes of your illness, we go after them, correct them, and do our best to prevent the triggers from returning.

To achieve optimal and sustainable health, we need to look at each individuals risk factors, along with their daily lifestyle. We then focus on true risks, and work to reduce them. We offer routine testing, the same as most family physician offices. But where we stand apart is in offering the non-routine, or cutting edge testing that truly looks for present and future risks. Once identified, we again work to reduce these risks, to prevent future disease.

Would you prefer I treat you after your heart attack,

or,

Would you prefer we work to prevent your heart attack from ever occurring?

If you are looking for quick office visits, you can follow the crowd to a busy HMO-insurance dominated waiting room. But if you are like me, and going along with the crowd when it does not appear to be in your best interests is not your style, then you should consider the Institute For Medical Wellness for your primary healthcare needs!

Introduction of Special Wellness Testing !!

When I founded the Institute For Medical Wellness, I never thought that I would be involved in as much cutting edge preventive testing as I now offer. The research and technological advances at specialized labs across the country have allowed me to feel confident that I can offer the newest, latest and best preventive testing in the area.

So what began as the Healthy Heart Program, has morphed into a Health and Wellness Program, as many of the causes of Heart and Vascular disease overlap with other disease processes.

We now offer testing that measures Aging, Inflammation, Omega-3 balance, Vitamin, mineral and micronutrient balance, specialized cholesterol and lipid panels, genetic testing for vascular disease, breast cancer and colon cancer, and a Heartscan to determine the amount of potential plaque buildup in your heart.  More will be added as I see the need, as long as the testing is necessary and reliable!

I have started a new web page where you can get more information on all of these tests, and it can be accessed by clicking here.

For extra special savings on all of the above tests, as well as our new Ultimate Wellness Plan, please click here. The special discounts are only available for testing completed by December 24, 2010.

 FLU SHOTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE

Continuing with looking for trends, it seems that every year when we start giving flu shots, a nasty, what I like to call, the pre-flu flu starts "going around." While I do not believe it is the "true flu" or influenza, it can feel like it. Last week I evaluated about a half dozen cases, with most all of them resolving on their own within 3-4 days, other than a lingering annoying cough.

So whenever this preflu starts hitting, I like to remind anyone who believes in flu shots to come in and get theirs. The flu shot when given, takes about 2 full weeks to build up its effectiveness, and can last anywhere from 3-6 months. As the true flu rarely hits before December, getting a flu shot in early to mid November should cover you through the end of the normal flu season, which lasts through March 2011.

Flushots are fully covered by Medicare.

Flushots, while supplies last, are included as part of a Traditional Wellness Plan.

For everyone else, Flushots will be available for $30.

There are other ways to prevent the flu.

My favorite is to supplement with Vitamin D, which is now available as our supplement of the month for October and November. Our Vitamin D supplement  has been shown to increase your blood level of Vitamin D, increasing the ability of your immune system to fight off infections such as the flu. Some studies have shown that Vitamin D3 levels above 40 decrease the incidence of influenza infection.

If you are unsure of your Vitamin D level, testing is also available at our office.

Tuesday November 2nd is just around the corner!

Please do not forget to vote!!

No matter what your views, unless you vote, you have no say!!

   PREDICTIONS

This is a fun area for me. I get to see how many of my predictions will come true.

November 1, 2010

Midterm Election Predictions

Please note these are only my predictions for the midterm elections. They are not my hopes, nor my endorsements.

2010 seems to be a conservative year with a backlash against the huge debt and unemployment rate in our country. There is plenty of blame to throw around, but as much as our nation wanted change in 2008, it wants it again now!

So here goes:

In the Congressional Race between Democrat John Adler and Republican John Runyan, the winner by less than 2% will be......

John Runyan

Runyan, whose previous profession was a blocking offensive lineman for professional football teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, will use his muscle to block the Presidents agenda in regards to spending, taxes and the deficit. We will see if he gets any holding penalties or personal fouls called against him as he so often did during his football career!

Overall, throughout the country, the Republicans will win 77 House seats and take back control of the House of Representatives. Come January 2011, Nancy Pelosi will resign her seat in the House.

In the Senate, Republicans will win at least 9 Senate seats, which may leave them one short of taking back control of the Senate. But..... Harry Reid will lose his re-election campaign and will no longer lead the Senate come January. Although the Republicans may not have enough to control the Senate, do not be surprised if an Independent such as Joe Lieberman, or a fiscally conservative democrat decides to caucus with the Republicans giving them control of the Senate as well.

That is it.

Let's see how I do!!

Again, please note these are only my predictions for the midterm elections. They are not necessarily my hopes, nor my endorsements.

Our supplement of the month for October and November 2010 is Vitamin D3. I believe that Vitamin D3 aids our immune systems, which helps protect us from the flu, or "influenza".

Our Vitamin D3 supplement, contains Vitamin D3, 2000iu per drop, and contains approximately 900 drops per bottle. The average dosage is between 1 and 4 drops daily, best taken at night.

Vitamin D3 can now be purchased for $15, $5 off the regular price. Vitamin D works great with or without a flu shot.
