Institute For Medical Wellness Healthy Living Report

Summer Storms

It is amazing how dependent we become on power.  In between the high heat, humidity, thunder storms, and 4+ hour power outage, I was trying to figure out what to do with no lights at night while at home. I do not mind the dark when I am asleep, but it was a bit early yet to get some ZZZ's. So I picked up my cell phone and called my old haunt, Starbucks. They had power, free WiFi internet and an outside table. I may have no power at home, but the new low humidity cooler night air was refreshing. So there I sat, trying to decide what to do with myself, when I starting typing away.

I used to love Starbucks. I originally got hooked on their hot chocolate, and then that morphed into trying their Vivanno protein shakes, which gave me the idea to try to make my own. Actually the second mortgage I had to take out to afford the almost daily Starbucks beverages also weighed into the decision. I wish I could write off all the protein shakes I purchased at Starbucks as a research and development expense. Unfortunately, my accountant nixed that idea ;

Oh well!

When I was hooked on the hot chocolate, my waist size started expanding. It made sense since the hot chocolate had a lot of sugar. Actually "alot" of sugar is an understatement. So when I came across the following article, I thought it would make a good newsletter topic.

Heart Disease, Triglycerides and waist size:

There are many risk factors I look for when trying to determine heart disease risk. Gender, Obesity, Family History and Diabetes are just a few. But I also have noticed a trend among individuals who have both elevated triglycerides and a big waistline. That is why I was happy to come across this study which somewhat agreed with my observations.

"In the paper, the authors explain that although obesity is a health hazard, not every obese person has the expected metabolic abnormalities associated with excess body fat, and these tend to occur more often in those people with an excess of intra-abdominal or visceral adipose tissue. They have previously proposed that waist circumference can be used as an easy measurement of intra-abdominal adiposity, with elevated triglyceride levels further identifying "dysfunctional" adipose tissue. They suggest that hypertriglyceridemia combined with an increased waistline could be a marker of lipid overflow resulting from a relative defect of adipose tissue to clear and store the excess triglycerides from overeating and lack of physical activity. "

OK ?

I'll try to read through the medical-speak. Individuals who put the majority of their extra fat weight around their waistlines, AND, who have elevated triglycerides, have a higher risk fo heart disease.

Pearl of the day:

If you have an enlarged waistline, and elevated triglycerides, please make an appointment to review your risks. At The Institute For Medical Wellness, our goal is not to treat you after your heart attack, but to prevent your first one!! Our Healthy Heart Program encompasses many new-wave screening techniques. Our Healthy Weight Program- Lite Edition is very succesful at helping you achieve a healthier weight, with the majority of weight coming off your waistline. While some of my medical beliefs may go against the grain of the traditional, they not only get results, but in my estimation, will be the future of preventative care within the next five years.

Summer Specials

Summer is a time when we all like to kick back and slow down. We like to enjoy ourselves, and indulge in activities that the colder weather does not allow. The summertime is also when our office slows down. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to go to the doctor's office when it is warm and sunny outside. But the summer is one of the best times to get your preventive health and wellness started, before the hustle-bustle of the fall and winter seasons.

So let me see if I can entice you with some special summer offers:

Special Summer 2010 Offer #1:

For any individual, couple or family that enrolls in a Traditional Wellness Plan between July 4th and Labor Day, September 6th, 2010, you will receive one Healthy Weight Program - Lite Edition, normally $99, at no charge. And if you are one of the first three to take advantage of this offer, you may also receive a one-hour massage from Julie Fischer, normally $70, also at no charge.

Special Summer 2010 Offer #2:

For Wellness Plan members whose plans are expiring, or are up for renewal, we are now able to offer monthly auto-pay options, with NO down payment or interest charges. So if you have a pre-paid Traditional Wellness Plan that has, or is about to expire, please stop by the office to set up your automatic-monthly payment plan. The new plans are valid for one year, and then continue month-to-month. This offer is valid as long as there is no lapse from your expiring plan.

Special Summer 2010 Offer #3:

In the past year, the Institute For Medical Wellness has expanded its ability to offer more cutting edge health and wellness testing and guidance. We will continue to look for the newest and best to offer you, as long as the tests or treatments are safe and effective. At present we offer:

1)    Healthy Weight Program-Lite Edition
2)    Therapeutic Massage
3)    Cardiac-CT with Calcium Scoring for evaluating heart disease risk
4)    Omega-3 testing -this index measures your omega-3 blood levels, which are increased by fish intake and supplemental fish oils. We use this test to stratify your heart disease risk, and overall level of inflammation. This value then allows individualization of your fish oil supplementation doses, if needed.
5)    Specialized cholesterol and vascular risk assessment testing- This group of blood tests goes much further in depth than routine lipid testing. In my view, routine lipid/cholesterol testing for prevention of heart disease has gone the way of the VCR and Betamax. The VAP comprehensive lipid and vascular testing is by far, a huge leap in predicting future risk of vascular and heart disease, and guides our recommendations for you.
6)    Comprehensive micronutrient testing- this blood test measures intracellular levels of many vitamins and nutrients. It is inside the cell that the nutrients perform their necessary functions, which makes this test a much better indicator of vitamin and nutrient status than routine blood levels.

You may purchase any two of the above tests at 20% off through Labor Day. If you do want the testing, but not until after the summer, you can put a $99 down payment to lock in the 20% discount, which will then be used towards the testing valid through December 31, 2010.

This offer can not be combined with any other offer.

Institute For Medical Wellness Supplement of the Month:

Summer is a time for getting outside and enjoying the sun and water sports. I like to joke around and say that taking supplemental fish oil makes you a better swimmer. Well, does anyone want to test this out? If so, then you may want to take advantage of our supplement of the month for July 2010.

Carlson's Fish Oil - available as follows:

Liquid 200ml bottle - regularly $20, is now $16 for the month of July.
Liquid 500ml bottle - regularly $40, is now $32 for the month of July.
Capsules- 250 per bottle - regularly $50, is now $40 for the month of July.

Other Institute For Medical Wellness Programs and Events:

Twitter:

No I have not become a full blown twitter twit who tweets all day about nothing. But I have found a way to twit with twitter to keep myself abreast of the newest and latest directions in health and wellness. In my infinite wisdom(?), I have learned how to tweet and retweet other twitted and non-twitted articles of health and wellness that I feel would be of interest to you. So if you have a twitter account, please sign up for my tweets! This entire paragraph was not something I ever expected when I graduated from medical school ; )
Now, wasn't that "tweet"?
