My family and I decided on a last minute weekend down the
shore this past weekend. We went to Ocean City New Jersey,
relaxed by the pool, walked the boardwalk , and of course,
enjoyed some boardwalk munchies.
Now before anyone gets on my case about boardwalk
munchies, let me say, that I always preach moderation in
diet for "special occasions", as well as for vacations.
Below are a few pix of my favorite boardwalk munchies.
While I did not partake in all of them, I think you can
guess the one I did ; )

Mr. Peanut indeed. This nut has scared more toddlers on
the boardwalk over the years than .....
Peanuts- lots of protein and healthy fat, but do not eat
more than a handful as they do contain a nice carbohydrate
content for those sensitive to carbohydrates. And if it is
peanut butter you enjoy, please look for the freshly ground
products, which contain no more than two ingredients,
peanuts and sometimes salt. The processed versions such as
Jif and Skippy contain added sugar, partially hydrogenated
fats and oils, among other less than stellar ingredients.
Besides, after you try freshly ground peanut butter, you
will not go back to the highly processed variety.

Who would have guessed? Me and Jilly, from the French Fry
Factory!
I must admit, once again, that French Fries, and many
other forms of potatoes, did I spell that right Mr.
Quayle?, are my problem areas in low carb eating. And after
arriving around lunchtime in Ocean City, and not being in
the mood to eat a big meal, we decided to have a large
bucket of freshly sliced french fries for lunch. Oh yes. We
also shared a bottle of water!
BTW, It was yummy. But was it worth the added pounds
around the waist??

Shrivers Salt Water Taffy. This is also a staple of the
New Jersey Shore. It is pretty much all sugar!! I had no
trouble avoiding this snack, but I had to get a picture.
Omega 3 Index- Is it helpful?
For most of 2010, the
Institute For Medical Wellness has been offering a test that
measures the amount of healthy omega-3 fish oils in your
cells, called the Omega-3-Index.
Why is this important?
Omega-3 fatty acids found in
many fish and supplemental fish oils have been purported to
have many beneficial effects on health, wellness and
prevention.
An article published in 2007 reviews some of the
beneficial effects, including their cardiac preventative
benefits. You can review this study by clicking on the link
above. Shown below is the simple diagram that we use to
gauge your omega-3 index and help you to achieve a healthier
index.

Greater than 8% is most
desirable and has been shown to have a lower relative risk
of dying from heart arrythmias. Arrythmias are irregular
heart rhythms that do not allow proper function of the heart
muscle. Arrythmias may occur at the end of a "heart attack",
and can directly cause cardiac death.
I highly recommend this test
for anyone with a personal or family history of heart
disease, or just to gauge your overall health. It is one
component of our
Healthy Heart Program.

Summer Specials
Summer is a time when
we all like to kick back and slow down. We like to enjoy
ourselves, and indulge in activities that the colder
weather does not allow. The summertime is also when our
office slows down. I don't blame anyone for not wanting
to go to the doctor's office when it is warm and sunny
outside. But the summer is one of the best times to get
your
preventive health and wellness started, before
the hustle-bustle of the fall and winter seasons.
So let me see if I
can entice you with some special summer offers:
Special
Summer 2010 Offer #1:
Special
Summer 2010 Offer #2:
For Wellness Plan
members whose plans are expiring, or are up for renewal,
we are now able to offer monthly auto-pay options, with
NO down payment or interest charges. So if you have
a pre-paid
Traditional Wellness Plan that
has, or is about to expire, please stop by the office to
set up your automatic-monthly payment plan. The new
plans are valid for one year, and then continue
month-to-month. This offer is valid as long as there is
no lapse from your expiring plan.
Special
Summer 2010 Offer #3:
In the past year, the
Institute For Medical Wellness has expanded its ability
to offer more cutting
edge
health and wellness testing and guidance. We will
continue to look for the newest and best to offer you,
as long as the tests or treatments are safe and
effective. At present we offer:
1) Healthy Weight
Program-Lite Edition
2) Therapeutic
Massage
3) Cardiac-CT with
Calcium Scoring for evaluating
heart
disease risk
4) Omega-3 testing
-this index measures your omega-3 blood levels, which
are increased by fish intake and supplemental fish
oils. We use this test to stratify your heart disease
risk, and overall level of inflammation. This value then
allows individualization of your fish oil
supplementation doses, if needed.
5) Specialized
cholesterol and vascular risk assessment testing- This
group of blood tests goes much further in depth than
routine lipid testing. In my view, routine
lipid/cholesterol testing for prevention of heart
disease has gone the way of the VCR and Betamax. The VAP
comprehensive lipid and vascular testing is by far, a
huge leap in predicting future risk of vascular and
heart disease, and guides our recommendations for you.
6) Comprehensive
micronutrient testing- this blood test measures
intracellular levels of many vitamins and nutrients.
It is inside the cell that the nutrients perform their
necessary functions, which makes this test a much better
indicator of vitamin and nutrient status than routine
blood levels.
You may purchase any
two of the above tests at 20% off through Labor Day. If
you do want the testing, but not until after the summer,
you can put a $99 down payment to lock in the 20%
discount, which will then be used towards the testing
valid through December 31, 2010.
This offer can not
be combined with any other offer.
Institute For Medical Wellness Supplement of
the Month:
I
love the summer!
Things slow down. The hectic rush-rush
of the school year is an afterthought.
I
like to do things differently in the
summer, especially when we get to
August.
So........
I
have decided not to have a
supplement of the month for August.
Instead, all of our
supplements will be 10% off for the
entire month.
If
you purchase three or more of any one
supplement, you can increase that
discount to 20% off. If you are
interested in 3 or more, please call our
office first to make sure we have it in
stock. If not, it usually only takes 2-3
working days to arrive.
Other Institute For Medical Wellness Programs
and Events:
Twitter:
No I have not
become a full blown twitter twit who tweets all
day about nothing. But I have found a way
to twit with twitter to keep myself abreast of
the newest and latest directions in health and
wellness. In my infinite wisdom(?), I have
learned how to tweet and retweet other twitted
and non-twitted articles of health and wellness
that I feel would be of interest to you. So if
you have a twitter account, please sign up for
my tweets! This entire paragraph was not
something I ever expected when I graduated from
medical school ; )
Now, wasn't that
"tweet"?

Health!
